Greta Young

Greta Young is a Santa Fe artist who studied at the California College of the Arts in Oakland California. 

Her work was selected by the Menil Collection curator Toby Kamps for an 8 person exhibit, “Art on the Edge” at the New Mexico Museum of Art in 2013. Her work was included in the “Atomic Surplus” exhibit at the Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe, and she was the featured artist in the “Atomic Surplus” review in ARTnews. Her works have been seen in numerous exhibitions across the country, including New York City, Chicago and Boston.

STATEMENT

My portraits are not necessarily based on the subject’s facial characteristics. 

I’m painting a “third space” where the 2 identities, mine and the subject’s, come together.  By letting my personality merge with the subject’s, I’m moving away from mere documentation and into the realm of the subjective.  The blend of semi-realism and abstraction allows me to capture things a camera never could- like the weight of a conversation or the “vibe” of someone’s energy.
